The Truth About Hair Shedding for 4C and Natural Hair- What Is Normal and What Is Not
Before you panic the next time you clean your brush, read this.
Hair shedding is one of the most misunderstood topics in the natural hair community. And for Black women and women with 4C hair specifically, the conversation is even more complicated because our hair texture, our styling choices, and our bodies interact with shedding in ways that most mainstream hair content completely ignores.

First The Hair Growth Cycle
Every single strand of hair on your head goes through four phases. The anagen phase is active growth and lasts two to seven years depending on your genetics. The catagen phase is a short transition where growth stops. The telogen phase is a resting period. And the exogen phase is when the strand actually sheds and the cycle starts over.
At any given moment roughly 85 to 90 percent of your hair is in active growth. The remaining 10 to 15 percent is resting and preparing to shed. This is normal biology, not damage.
How Much Shedding Is Normal
Research consistently puts normal daily shedding between 50 and 100 strands per day. Hair loss in women is generally defined as losing more than 125 hairs per day. For women with thicker, denser 4C hair that number can look alarming when you see it collected after a wash day. But spread across a full head of hair that contains anywhere from 80,000 to 120,000 strands, losing 100 is not a crisis.
Here is something that matters specifically for natural hair. Because many of us wash weekly or biweekly instead of daily, the shed strands that would normally come out gradually accumulate between wash days. So what you see on wash day is not all new shedding. It is several days worth of completed hair cycles releasing at once. That is normal.
The Difference Between Shedding & Hair Loss
This distinction is critical and most people do not know it.
Shedding is normal. A shed strand has a small white bulb at the root. That is the follicle completing its cycle naturally. Hair loss is when your hair falls out faster than it grows back and the density of your hair visibly decreases over time.
Breakage is different from both. Breakage strands snap mid-shaft with no bulb present. That means damage along the strand itself, not a completed growth cycle. For 4C hair specifically, the tight coil pattern makes it more dense and coarse compared to other hair types, which also makes it more fragile and more prone to breakage if not properly moisturized and protected.
Breakage and shedding look similar in your brush but the solutions are completely different. Shedding requires addressing internal triggers. Breakage requires addressing moisture, manipulation, and protective care.
Hair Loss Conditions That Disproportionately Affect Black Women
This is the part of the conversation that does not get enough space.
According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Oma N. Agbai, Black women face unique challenges with hair loss. There are specific conditions that show up more frequently in our community and they are worth knowing by name.
Traction alopecia and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia are two of the most common hair loss conditions that affect Black women. Two thirds of Black women will notice hair thinning by age 50.
Traction alopecia is caused by consistent tension on the hair root from tight styles. Braids, weaves, cornrows, and ponytails worn too tightly for too long weaken the follicle over time. Johns Hopkins Medicine confirms that Black women are particularly prone to traction alopecia caused by heat, chemicals, and tight styles that pull at the hair root. The edges and hairline are almost always the first place it shows up.
Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, known as CCCA, is a scarring form of hair loss that starts at the crown and spreads outward. It is found predominantly in Black women and if untreated can cause permanent follicle damage. If you are noticing consistent thinning or tenderness at your crown, that warrants a visit to a dermatologist, not just a new product.
Telogen effluvium is the stress and trauma-triggered shedding we covered in our Mental Health Awareness post. It is temporary and reversible but requires addressing the root cause, not just the hair.
What Triggers Excessive Shedding Specifically in Natural Hair
Beyond the general triggers of stress, hormonal shifts, and nutritional deficiencies, there are patterns specific to our community.
Chronic manipulation. Detangling 4C hair while dry, using tools that create too much tension, or rushing through wash day all put mechanical stress on already fragile strands.
Chemical overlap. Dermatologists recommend going two to three months between chemical relaxing treatments, and if your hair breaks or sheds after a treatment, stopping chemical application completely.
Tight protective styles worn too long. A style meant to protect your hair can cause traction damage if left in past eight weeks or if installed too tightly.
Scalp inflammation from product buildup. Heavy products that sit on the scalp without proper clarifying can block follicles and create an inflammatory environment that disrupts the growth cycle.
Nutritional deficiencies that often go undiagnosed. Anemia, low Vitamin D levels, and abnormal thyroid hormones can all affect hair health, and simple bloodwork from a primary care physician can determine if these are contributing to your hair loss.
What You Can Actually Do
Address the trigger first. Always. No topical product can override what is happening internally.
Detangle on wet, conditioned hair only. 4C strands are most vulnerable when dry.
Clarify your scalp monthly. Remove buildup that is blocking your follicles before you add anything new.
Keep protective styles within a six to eight week window and make sure your edges have breathing room.
